Itinerary

Day 1

Tuesday 27th November
Dinner

The first part of our journey takes us south through Te Awamutu and Mangakino and along the western side of Lake Taupo to a lunch break destination at Waiouru. After lunch, we turn off the main highway to head up over the hills on the famous Gentle Annie Road. The route takes us past several huge North Island stations and the views in places are just indescribable. The road itself is surprisingly good. Our hotel for all four nights is in Napier.

Day 2

Wednesday 28th November
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning, we travel to Havelock North to join John Vickers who takes us on a guided tour around some of Hawke’s Bay’s beautiful and historic homes. John is a widely recognised expert on the history and architecture of New Zealand’s early homesteads and provides a very interesting and informative commentary. A tasty lunch is also included.

Day 3

Thursday 29th November
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We spend our second day with John for a wonderful day looking at the stunning historic homes around Hawke’s Bay.

Day 4

Friday 30th November
Breakfast, Dinner

This morning, we head off to the world famous Cape Kidnappers Gannet Sanctuary. The bus takes us right to the sanctuary (no walking involved) and really is an amazing scenic and natural experience.
The afternoon is free to spend some time looking around Napier. Why not go on a guided tour around the city to see its unique history and Art Deco buildings. (Own expense). This one and a half hour guided walk through Napier’s Art Deco Quarter includes the most stunning examples of this architectural style in the city.

Day 5

Saturday 1st December
Breakfast

Today, we start our homeward journey and stop in Taupo for lunch before our return to Auckland. Passengers can be dropped off along the way if requested. As we head home, we can reflect on the time that we spent looking around Hawke’s Bay’s beautiful and historic homes.
