Lots to do on such a little island.
Explore this tiny tropical paradise by knowing that it's one of the safest destinations in the world. See up close what island life is like. Its isolation and coral create a sensational coastline and the water is crystal clear.
For such a small island, there is plenty to see and do and we include tours of the whole island with visits to traditional Niuean farms and villages, a vanilla plantation and much more. We enjoy cultural performances at our hotel and when dining out plus you may even see whales and dolphins just over the reef. There’s also plenty of time to just sit back, relax and enjoy the sunshine.
Itinerary
Day 1
We travel to Auckland to join our flight to the island paradise of Niue. We cross the International Date Line and arrive in Niue the day before. On arrival, we check into our truly unique ‘home’ for the next seven nights, the Matavai Resort which is situated on the west coast and has wonderful views overlooking the Pacific Ocean. We may even spot some Spinner Dolphins and Humpback Whales from the hotel. Tonight, we enjoy a 'Taste of Niue' Barbecue.
Day 2
Today, we go on the Commodore’s Orientation Tour which includes an informed commentary on the history and culture of Niue. The afternoon is free and tonight, we go out to dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 3
Today is a free day, although we have arranged to go to the wonderful Wash Away Cafe for lunch which we savour while looking out over the bay to the ocean. In Niue, Sunday is considered to be a day of rest with most people attending church and if you wish to go, we can arrange that for you. Tonight, we enjoy an International Flavours Menu Theme Night at the hotel. There will also be live music at the Pool Bar to entertain us.
Day 4
This morning, we have some free time before we head off to explore the Avatele Village after lunch. This village was one of Niue’s early trading stations and where the first premier was elected. Here, we are given an introduction into everyday life in a Niuean village with refreshments provided. Tonight, we dine out at a restaurant in the capital, Alofi.
Day 5
This morning, we travel by 4WD and visit a plantation to see the traditional techniques and customs of the Niuean farmers. There is even a chance to hold an Uga (Coconut Crab) in your hand. After lunch back at the hotel, we go on a tour of a Vanilla Plantation and learn about some of the many uses of the plant as well as learning how they pollinate the plant by hand. A light refreshment will also be provided. Tonight, we go out for a buffet dinner with entertainment provided.
Day 6
Today, we embark on another unique cultural village tour as we discover Lakepa Village. This tour shows us what it's like to live in a Niuean Village in this day and age. We enjoy a traditional Umu (earth oven) style lunch that is prepared by cooking the food slowly underground with the food wrapped in leaves. Lunch is served in the school that is the focal point in the village. This evening, we enjoy another meal out at a local restaurant.
Day 7
A free day to relax and enjoy our tranquil surroundings or continue exploring - perhaps a visit to the capital Alofi could be an option or do a last bit of shopping for souvenirs. Tonight, we enjoy a Farewell Spit Roast, Barbecue & Fire Dance Performance. We feel this is the best way to end a wonderful time in Niue.
Day 8
Some free time this morning before we travel just down the road to the airport for our flight home. We travel west across the International Date Line and arrive back in Auckland.
