Itinerary

Day 1

Dinner

Our tour departs from Auckland. We fly to Dunedin where we spend the first 3 nights.

Day 2

Breakfast, Dinner

We visit historical Olveston House for a guided tour around this national treasure. After lunch, we go on the Taieri Gorge Railway and see the spectacular views of the gorge.

Day 3

Breakfast, Dinner

This morning is for nature lovers as we travel out to the Otago Peninsula. We may even glimpse the Hooker’s sea lions and rarely seen elephant seals. We visit Penguin Place at the foot of Taiaroa Head and go to the Royal Albatross Centre on Harington Point. On our return to Dunedin, we visit Larnach Castle to admire its unique architecture and gardens.

Day 4

Breakfast, Dinner

This morning, we travel via the scenic and historical area of the Catlins in the South Otago and Southland coastal areas to Invercargill Airport for our short flight to Stewart Island. After our hotel check in we join our local tour guide who takes us around many of the breath-taking sights of this special region. We stay on Stewart Island for 2 nights.

Day 5

Breakfast, Dinner

Our Stewart Island exploration continues with a boat trip around the sheltered waters of Paterson Inlet. We visit the birdwatcher’s delight of Ulva Island and maybe even spot some fur seals and penguins. On the return journey, relax on board and enjoy your lunch whilst looking out over the myriad of secluded bays and coves that the locals have at their back door.

Day 6

Breakfast, Dinner

This morning, we fly back to Invercargill. We meet up with a local guide who will show us around Invercargill and Bluff followed by a free afternoon. We stay in Invercargill for 2 nights.

Day 7

Breakfast, Dinner

A free day for you to take in the sights of Invercargill. You can visit the quirky Demolition Museum or take a stroll around the Otepuni Gardens. The choice is yours.

Day 8

Breakfast, Dinner

We travel along the Southern Scenic Route through Riverton, Colac Bay and Tuatapere and on to Manapouri. This is a historic area with many fabulous coastal vistas, which we have time to explore at a leisurely pace. We stay in Manapouri for the next 2 nights.

Day 9

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning we enjoy a cruise takes us around the dramatic and unspoilt grandeur of Doubtful Sound. On the return journey, we visit the amazing Lake Manapouri West Arm underground power station - Hopefully the renovations will be completed.

Day 10

Breakfast, Dinner

This morning, we set off on an adventure through the back road to Walter Peak Station. The views as we travel past the Mavora Lakes and through Mt Nicholas and Walter Peak Stations are indescribable and are unique to this part of the South Island. Following our arrival, we enjoy the surroundings of the Walter Peak Homestead. At lunchtime, we board the TSS Earnslaw for the journey across Lake Wakatipu. There will be some free time this afternoon for you to enjoy looking around Queenstown and perhaps fit in a bungee jump! Our next 2 nights are in Queenstown. Tonight, we go up on the Skyline Gondola for dinner at the famous scenic Skyline Restaurant.

Day 11

Breakfast, Dinner

We travel the short distance to Stoneridge Estate to visit the Blessed House and Gardens. We then make the big climb up to the Coronet Peak Ski Resort to take in the magnificent mountain scenery and vast views of this spectacular region, (depending on road and weather conditions). Next we visit the historic and delightful town of Arrowtown. After lunch, we make another short but very picturesque trip around Lake Wakatipu to Glenorchy and Paradise - believe it!

Day 12

Breakfast, Dinner

We take in more fabulous views as we make our way over the Crown Range (depending on road conditions) past the historic Cardrona Hotel for a quick look around Wanaka. We continue through Omarama and past the mighty Waitaki Hydro Scheme Lakes and Canals to our overnight stop in Twizel.

Day 13

Breakfast, Dinner

We drive over Burkes Pass and continue to Geraldine where we join the Inland Scenic Route and follow the Southern Alps to Rangiora. After lunch in Rangiora, it’s out to the East Coast for the lovely drive around to Kaikoura for tonight’s stay.

Day 14

Breakfast, Dinner

Today, for those who choose, we join an unforgettable and magical whale watching experience and see these graceful giants up close. The afternoon is spent making our way to Picton for our sailing on the Interislander through the Marlborough Sounds before arriving at our last overnight stop in Wellington.

Day 15

Breakfast, Dinner

A free day for us which we can spend looking at some of the many wonderful sights in our capital city or just taking it easy and relaxing.

Day 16

Breakfast

A complete change of landscape today as we make our way up the North Island on the Northern Explorer and back home.
